Conclusion
Planet Earth is possible for us to live in due to the many layers, below our feet that serve as our foundation. These layers, such as the mantle and the crust, are the reason why we are able to walk across the street without frying up instantly ; without these layers, we wouldn’t even exist. And like Earth’s layer, my family and I wouldn’t be in such a privileged position today, if it weren’t for my grandfather. My grandfather’s success story is the reason why I live in Singapore and attend one of the best private schools today.
Every summer, my family and I would go on a 1 hour car ride from Delhi to Noida, where we would see Surajit standing outside his house ready to meet us with a large smile on his face. Everyday, my grandfather would have my brother and I sit on his bed, and he would teach us something new about the world. He would teach us how earthquakes form or why volcanoes erupt, and everyday, my brother and I would learn something very interesting from him. One morning when my brother and I were getting ready to get our “daily lesson” on the world, our parents dropped a bomb on us and told us that, “Grandpa didn’t wake up today.” These words created the lowest point of my life, and created a large hole in my heart, that I’m probably never going to be able to fill again. But, while he is no longer with us, his legacy still continues till this day.
Writing this project, I was able to picture a young handsome boy transform into a respected successful man, through his opportunities, his work ethic, and his determination. While he would be classified as a “self-made” man, he didn’t do it completely on his own, as his parental upbringings, relationships, and family’s attitude towards education also played a critical role in shaping the man he turned out to become. If my grandfather hadn’t made the right decisions, hadn’t worked as hard as he did, and hadn’t been as determined as he was, I probably wouldn’t even be in Singapore attending one of the best schools in the world. As a former Chairman of one of India’s largest oil companies, my grandfather guided my father, Monojit, up the corporate ladder, when Monojit was new to the oil industry. He mentored my father and created many opportunities for him, which consequently led to my father becoming successful as well, and me living a privileged lifestyle. Not only did he help my father, but Surajit Chaliha directly impacted my life too. He taught me to value education. He taught me to work hard. He taught me to seize opportunities. And ultimately, he poised me for success. Through the cherished times that I’ve spent with him, and his many significant life events, Surajit taught me how I can be a “precious stone” just like him. And for these reasons, I am honored and proud to call my grandfather, my outlier.
